A Special Request
Help a Parent Help Other Parents and Caregivers
What might you think if your 13-year-old, who until that point went by “she/her” pronouns, came to you and told you that he was transgender? How might you feel? What might you do?
That’s the situation my friend, Susannah Staats, found herself in toward the latter part of 2015. To process her own experience, and to support her son’s transition, she created a “field guide” for parents of trans kids.
Today, I’m reaching out with a special request.
Susannah was awarded a prestigious fellowship to revisit what she drafted years ago. Her vision? A world where gender non-conforming kids thrive and unleash their super powers through the unwavering, informed support of their parents and caregivers, as well as the adults around them.
Specifically, she hopes to build upon that initial field guide and a) co-design with parents and caregivers tools and resources to support their kids, no matter where they live, b) create a vision for a national model of parent and caregiver support, and, c) find a national partner who could scale the product so that all kids can become their authentic selves.
You can learn more about the project here.
Here’s how you can help:
If you want to be in touch with Susannah to explore how you might support the project, please fill out this short form.
If you know someone who is the parent or caregiver of a trans child, please forward this post to them.
At the heart of what we do here at The Practice of Fatherhood is build community and cultivate compassion. Susannah’s project will do both. And boy can these times benefit greatly from that! I hope you will support it.
Chris
